What's Your Body Saying: Physical Wellness
In the daily race of life, we challenge our bodies to maintain physical wellness--we demand that our bodies rise in the morning and move us through an over-scheduled day with little or no complaining. However, we sleep too little and drink too much caffeine. We sit too close to the TV and too far away from our computer screens. We turn our mp3 players up too loud and communicate too softly to be heard by others.
You may currently spend your free time catching up on sleep, nursing body and head aches, reclined in front of the TV with your favorite junk food and beverages. And you may then wonder, “Why don’t I feel better?”
We stretch every major system in our bodies to its outer limit, and then wonder why we feel sick. Our health care system is currently designed to cure illnesses. With numerous trips to the doctor or to the pharmacy, you may feel that you spend significant time on your "sick care" rather than true health care. Anne Wilson Schaef, PhD. and author of many books including Meditations for Women Who Do Too Much, once said, "Illness is the Western world's only acceptable form of meditation." The only time we seem to slow down is when the body commands us to stop! When you have free time, wouldn't you rather spend it celebrating life and actively pursuing your goals and dreams?
Choose Optimum Physical Wellness
Physical wellness is being aware of how your body feels and performs, and seeking help when you sense a change in yourself.
What would you DO if you were able to move and breathe freely? Where would you go? Who would you see? How would you live?
When we're busy, it is easy to fall into a rut of putting our self-care last on the to-do list of each day.
Angie writes, I'll never forget the winter of my senior year in high school. I was playing varsity basketball and singing in the top performing choir. Some nights I was changing clothes in the car as my parents drove me from a game to a concert. When the big holiday assembly rolled around, guess who was sick in bed and had to miss it? Yep, me! I continue to learn this lesson of self-care over and over again in my adult life too.
For 20 years our family has practiced physical wellness through proper nutrition, holistic health solutions, moderate exercise, and we always strive to get adequate rest. These building blocks maintain the body's necessary energy and stamina required to face each day's challenges.
If you are truly to live out your potential, then you must start to prioritize care of your body. When you look and feel your best, you perform your best!
